Kathy's Raised Garden Beds

“This year was the perfect time for my husband and me to build some raised beds in our backyard.  I love to be puttering in a garden and since we moved into our home 2 years ago, we’ve realized that the ground is not the best for growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

The ground soil is mostly clay and rock which makes digging imperative for me and so we decided to have Rick build three 4’ x 10’ raised beds on the west side of our backyard.  We both love blueberries and raspberries, and I can already see some fruit growing on a few of the bushes!  I found some beautiful lettuce starts and broccoli so we will try them this year.  I was late in getting vegetables like potatoes, beets and carrots and will plan early next spring to incorporate them into one of the beds.  For herbs we use a lot of basil throughout the summer and planted it along with dill and rosemary.  For my cutting garden I love Dahlia’s and have Phlox and Salvia.

I will keep you posted with my garden’s progress throughout the summer.  Happy Gardening!!” -Kathy

Preparing Your Home for Summer: Tips for a Cool and Inviting Space

Summer is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to refresh your home and get it ready for the warm months ahead. Whether you’re looking forward to backyard barbecues, lazy afternoons by the pool, or simply enjoying the longer days, a few simple updates can make your home feel cool, comfortable, and inviting. In this blog, we’ll explore some practical tips for getting your home summer-ready!

1. Lighten Up Your Interior

Switch to Light Fabrics

Swap out heavy winter fabrics for lighter, breathable materials. Opt for linen or cotton for your bedding, curtains, and throws. These fabrics not only feel cooler but also add an airy, relaxed vibe to your home.

Brighten Your Color Scheme

Summer is all about light and brightness. Consider updating your color scheme with fresh, vibrant hues. Pastels, whites, and coastal blues can instantly lift the mood of any room. Add colorful throw pillows, rugs, or wall art to create a lively, summery atmosphere.

2. Maximize Natural Light

Clean Windows and Screens

Start by giving your windows a thorough cleaning. Sparkling clean windows let in more light and enhance the overall feel of your home. Don’t forget to clean the screens too, as dust and dirt can block airflow and light.

Use Sheer Curtains

Heavy drapes can make a room feel dark and stuffy. Replace them with sheer curtains that allow natural light to filter through while still providing some privacy. Sheer curtains can make your space feel more open and airy.

3. Create Outdoor Living Spaces

Set Up a Comfortable Patio

Transform your patio or balcony into a cozy outdoor retreat. Add comfortable seating, like cushioned chairs or a hammock, and include plenty of throw pillows for added comfort. A small outdoor rug can define the space and make it feel like an extension of your home.

Add Outdoor Lighting

Extend your outdoor enjoyment into the evening with the right lighting. String lights, lanterns, and solar-powered pathway lights create a warm, inviting ambiance. Consider using LED bulbs for energy efficiency.

4. Refresh Your Greenery

Introduce Indoor Plants

Indoor plants can instantly breathe life into your home. Choose low-maintenance plants like succulents, snake plants, or pothos that thrive in the summer heat. Not only do they add a touch of nature, but they also help purify the air.

Tend to Your Garden

Summer is the perfect time to give your garden some attention. Trim back overgrown plants, remove weeds, and add fresh mulch to your flower beds. Plant seasonal flowers like marigolds, petunias, and zinnias for a burst of color.

5. Maintain Your Cooling Systems

Service Your Air Conditioner

Ensure your air conditioner is ready to handle the summer heat by scheduling a maintenance check. Clean or replace the filters, check for any leaks, and make sure the unit is running efficiently. Regular maintenance can prevent breakdowns and improve energy efficiency.

Use Fans Wisely

Ceiling fans and portable fans can help circulate air and keep your home cool. Make sure your ceiling fans are set to rotate counterclockwise, which creates a cooling breeze. Use fans in conjunction with your air conditioner to reduce energy costs.

6. Declutter and Organize

Simplify Your Space

Summer is the perfect time to declutter and simplify your living space. Clear out any unnecessary items, organize your belongings, and create a more open and relaxed environment. A clutter-free home feels more spacious and inviting.

Store Winter Gear

Pack away heavy winter clothing, blankets, and seasonal decor. Use storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags to save space. Storing winter gear out of sight will make room for your summer essentials and keep your home feeling fresh and organized.

Getting your home ready for summer doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a few simple updates and some thoughtful planning, you can create a cool, comfortable, and inviting space that’s perfect for the season. From lightening up your interior to maximizing outdoor living areas, these tips will help you make the most of your home this summer. So, roll up your sleeves, embrace the warmer weather, and enjoy all that summer has to offer in your beautifully prepared home!

Transform Your Space with Wallpaper: A Guide to Elevating Your Interiors

When it comes to interior design, the power of wallpaper is often underestimated. Far from being a relic of the past, wallpaper has made a triumphant return, offering endless possibilities for transforming your space. Whether you're looking to add a splash of color, a touch of elegance, or a bold statement, wallpaper is a versatile and stylish option. In this blog, we'll explore the many benefits of wallpaper, current trends, and tips for choosing the perfect design for your home.

The Benefits of Wallpaper

1. Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of wallpaper is its versatility. With an incredible range of patterns, textures, and colors available, wallpaper can suit any style or mood. From traditional damasks and florals to contemporary geometrics and abstract designs, there's something for every taste.

2. Durability

Modern wallpapers are designed to last. Many are washable and can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life, making them a great choice for high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms. Some wallpapers even have antimicrobial and moisture-resistant properties, perfect for kitchens and bathrooms.

3. Easy to Install and Remove

Gone are the days of tedious wallpaper removal. Today's wallpapers are much easier to install and remove, thanks to advancements in adhesive technology. Peel-and-stick options are particularly user-friendly, allowing for quick changes without damaging your walls.

4. Adds Depth and Texture

Wallpaper can add a level of depth and texture that paint simply can't achieve. Textured wallpapers, such as grasscloth or embossed designs, create a tactile experience that adds richness and dimension to any room.

Current Wallpaper Trends

1. Bold Patterns and Colors

Maximalism is in, and bold, eye-catching patterns are a fantastic way to embrace this trend. Think oversized florals, vibrant tropical prints, and dramatic geometrics. These designs can create a focal point in any room, making a strong style statement.

2. Nature-Inspired Designs

Bringing the outside in continues to be a popular trend. Wallpapers featuring botanical prints, landscapes, and natural textures like wood and stone can create a serene and grounding atmosphere in your home.

3. Metallic Accents

For a touch of glamour, look for wallpapers with metallic accents. Gold, silver, and copper details can catch the light and add a luxurious feel to your space. These are especially effective in dining rooms, bedrooms, and powder rooms.

4. Murals and Custom Designs

Custom murals and large-scale prints are perfect for creating a unique and personalized space. Whether it’s a map of the world in a child’s bedroom or an abstract art piece in the living room, murals can transform an entire wall into a piece of art.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wallpaper

1. Consider the Room’s Purpose

Think about how the room will be used and the mood you want to create. Soft, muted patterns can make a bedroom feel calm and relaxing, while bright, dynamic designs can energize a home office or playroom.

2. Sample First

Always order samples before committing to a wallpaper. This allows you to see how the pattern looks in your space and under different lighting conditions.

3. Mix and Match

Don't be afraid to mix different wallpapers within your home. Using complementary patterns and colors can create a cohesive look while still adding variety and interest.

4. Scale and Proportion

Pay attention to the scale of the pattern. Large patterns can overwhelm small rooms, while tiny prints might get lost in larger spaces. Balance is key to achieving the desired effect.

Conclusion

Wallpaper is a fantastic tool for anyone looking to breathe new life into their interiors. With its versatility, durability, and the vast array of designs available, it's easy to find a wallpaper that fits your style and needs. Whether you're going for bold and dramatic or subtle and sophisticated, wallpaper can help you create a space that truly feels like home. So, why not take the plunge and let your walls tell a story?

The focal point of the room is the beloved chandelier, which gracefully complements the transitional, streamlined furnishings. The dining table, sideboard, and chairs were carefully selected to balance the room's aesthetic, enhancing its timeless appeal.

Whether you're looking to showcase a collection of art prints, photographs, or other cherished items, a gallery wall can add depth, interest, and personality to any room. Here's everything you need to know about creating your own stunning gallery wall!

The first step in creating a gallery wall is to select the wall where you want to display your artwork. This could be a focal point in your living room, a hallway, or even a staircase. When selecting artwork for your gallery wall, consider the overall theme or aesthetic you want to achieve. You can choose pieces that complement each other in terms of color, style, or subject matter, or you can mix and match for a more eclectic look. The key is to create a cohesive arrangement that feels balanced and visually appealing.

Before hanging your artwork, it's a good idea to lay out your gallery wall on the floor first. This will allow you to experiment with different arrangements until you find one that works best for your space. Once you're happy with the layout, you can start hanging your artwork on the wall.

When hanging your artwork, consider using a variety of frame sizes and styles to add visual interest. You can also play with the spacing between frames to create a dynamic and engaging arrangement.

In addition to framed artwork, you can also incorporate other elements into your gallery wall, such as wall decals, wall stickers, or even three-dimensional objects like shelves or planters. These elements can add texture and depth to your gallery wall, making it even more visually striking.

Overall, gallery walls offer a versatile and creative way to showcase your personal style and interests. Whether you're creating a gallery wall in your living room, bedroom, or any other space, the key is to have fun and experiment with different arrangements until you find one that feels just right!

Keeping it Real: Merriam-Webster's 'Authentic' Crowned Word of the Year 2023!

Guess what just made it to the top of the lexical charts? Drumroll, please... Merriam-Webster Dictionary has officially declared "Authentic" as the Word of the Year for 2023!

Yep, you read that right. In a world that sometimes feels like it's spinning off its axis, Merriam-Webster has picked a word that brings us back to our roots, our true selves, and the essence of genuine connections.

Let's break it down a bit. So, why "Authentic"?

Living in the Real World: We all know that social media can sometimes make our lives look like a highlight reel. With filters, curated posts, and perfectly timed snaps, authenticity can seem like a rare gem. But, hold on tight, because "Authentic" is here to remind us that being genuine, real, and true to ourselves is not only enough but worthy of celebration!

Everyday Heroes: Merriam-Webster's choice reflects a societal shift towards appreciating authenticity in people, brands, and experiences. It's a nod to those who keep it real, who don't hide behind masks, and who embrace their uniqueness. Authenticity is the hero in a world that sometimes seems to be drowning in a sea of staged moments.

I named my company Authentic Home because I believe in the power of genuine connections and true comfort. A home should be more than just a physical space; it should resonate with authenticity, reflecting the unique essence and stories of those who inhabit it. Authenticity in every aspect, from design to service, is the cornerstone of my company. I want people to experience a sense of belonging and sincerity when they enter an Authentic Home – a place where they can truly be themselves and create lasting memories. The name embodies my commitment to providing homes that are not only beautifully designed but also deeply genuine, fostering a sense of real belonging and comfort!

Merriam-Webster's Insight: Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster, shed some light on the choice, saying, "In a time where superficiality sometimes takes center stage, 'Authentic' emerged as a beacon of clarity, reminding us to cherish what is real and true."

So, whether you're vibing with the word because you're all about keeping it real or because you appreciate the authenticity movement, one thing's for sure – "Authentic" is the word we didn't know we needed!

Elevate Your Space: Adding Wallpaper to Your Ceiling for a Stunning Effect!

Greetings, decor enthusiasts and design aficionados! Today, I have an exciting tale to share about a recent project that took a dining room from traditional to spectacular with just one bold move – wallpapering the ceiling!

I had the pleasure of working with my client, Pam, whose charming 1930s home nestled along the picturesque Puget Sound demanded a touch of brilliance. Pam sought to transform her dedicated dining room into a space that exuded elegance and left guests in awe as they entered. Her desire for a 'Wow' factor to impress her frequent guests led us to embark on a daring yet enchanting journey.

The Vision: Floral Splendor Above

Pam's dream was to create an impact without compromising the classic charm of her home. After much brainstorming, we settled on the idea of adorning the ceiling with a striking wallpaper design from Designers Guild called "Peonia."

The floral masterpiece of the "Peonia" wallpaper not only resonated with the traditional essence of the 1930s but also aligned perfectly with Pam's upcoming additions – two brand new dining room chairs adorned in the same captivating "Peonia" floral pattern.

The Transformation: From Blank Space to Breathtaking

Implementing this vision required meticulous planning and precise execution. The process of wallpapering a ceiling might seem unconventional, but the result is undeniably mesmerizing. We carefully applied the "Peonia" wallpaper to the ceiling, ensuring every detail aligned flawlessly, amplifying the room's grandeur.

The Impact: Awe-Inspiring Elegance

The outcome? A dining room that now radiates sophistication and charm. As light dances upon the floral patterns above, the ambiance transforms, evoking a sense of timeless beauty. The once-ordinary ceiling is now a canvas of artistry, setting the stage for unforgettable gatherings and soirées.

As Rick embarked on a factory tour, I seized the opportunity to immerse myself in the captivating town of Verona, a place that exudes history, romance, and the charm of Italian culture. My two days of exploration were nothing short of enchanting.

Picturesque Landscapes and Charming Decor

Verona greeted me with its scenic beauty and welcoming atmosphere. Every step of my walking tour revealed a new layer of charm. The town's enchanting landscapes were a visual treat, and I couldn't resist capturing the beauty of a florist shop with its alluring décor adorning the entryway.

Romeo and Juliet's Balcony

One of the most iconic sights in Verona is the famous Romeo and Juliet balcony. As I walked through the town, I couldn't resist stopping by to pay my respects to the timeless love story. I mingled with the locals, explored the various markets, and meandered through the charming shops that line the streets.

The Statue of Juliet and a Touch of Good Luck

Beneath Juliet's balcony, I encountered a small square where a statue of Juliet herself stands. The local myth suggests that touching her breast brings good luck. It's a tradition that has been embraced by countless visitors, and I couldn't resist taking part in this age-old custom.

Italy's Oldest Arena: A Glimpse of History

Verona's main town square boasts Italy's oldest arena, a historical gem that predates even the famous Colosseum in Rome. As I explored this ancient amphitheater, I couldn't help but smile at the playful gladiator figure that awaited my arrival. It was a moment of historical wonder that I knew my friends would love.

Unforgettable Evenings and Memorable Dining

The company that sponsored Rick's trip to Verona hosted dinners at local restaurants that added a touch of magic to our time in the town. This photo of us was taken after one of our delightful dinners, capturing the warmth of the moment.

One of our favorite places in Verona was Il Ristorante Maffei, tucked away inside a courtyard off the piazza. The food and atmosphere combined to create a truly memorable evening.

A Week of Magic and Serenity in Impruneta, Tuscany

After the enchantment of Venice, we embarked on a journey that would take us to the heart of Tuscany, where rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves paint a breathtaking picture of tranquility. Our destination was the Relais Villa Olmo, a former nunnery that has been transformed into a winery and olive oil resort.

The Land of Olive Groves and Diadema Wine

The Relais Villa Olmo is a place where history and nature intertwine seamlessly. Thousands of olive groves envelope the landscape of the valley behind the charming villa, creating a serene and picturesque setting. It's a testament to the age-old tradition of olive cultivation in Tuscany.

One of the highlights of our stay was the opportunity to sample the Diadema wine, the namesake of the estate. The wine carries with it the essence of this beautiful region, and every sip is a journey through the Tuscan terroir. We also had the pleasure of experiencing the flavors of their olive oils, each a testament to the quality and expertise that the estate is known for.

Venice in a Day: A Glimpse of Magic

Our whirlwind one-night journey through Venice was nothing short of enchanting. Despite the challenge of Google maps leading us astray into canals (a common mishap for newcomers), we managed to capture the essence of this remarkable city in just one night.

Navigating the Canals and a Gondola Traffic Jam

Venice is a labyrinth of winding canals and narrow alleyways, and it took us some time to get the hang of maneuvering through its intricate web of streets. We chuckled at the memory of a "traffic jam" of gondolas on one of the canals. It was a sight to behold, a reminder that in Venice, even the traffic jams have a certain charm.

Unfortunately, we missed out on a gondola ride due to a sudden rainstorm that hit later in the day. However, we made the most of the situation by taking a boat tour of the city. It was a unique perspective and allowed us to see Venice's beauty from a different angle.

Hotel Moresco: A Venetian Gem

Our home for the night was the charming Hotel Moresco, a boutique hotel located in the university area of the city, not far from the train station. The hotel's Venetian décor and the warm hospitality of the staff made our stay incredibly welcoming and relaxing. The attention to detail and the artistic touches throughout the hotel added to the magic of our Venice experience.

Views from the Room and Venetian Elegance

The view from our room at the Hotel Moresco was nothing short of breathtaking. It offered a glimpse of the timeless beauty that Venice is known for. The city's unique charm and character were on full display, even from our window.

We couldn't help but be captivated by the beautiful decorations and architectural details that adorned the city. Every corner we turned revealed a piece of Venice's rich history and artistic heritage.

Opera in Venice: A Night to Remember

Just minutes away from St. Mark's Square, we dined at La Caravella, savoring a delicious meal before a memorable evening at the opera. The Barber of Seville came to life at the Musica a Palazzo, an old palace where various acts are performed in different rooms. It was a unique and immersive way to experience opera in the heart of Venice, surrounded by history and culture.

Our one night in Venice was a whirlwind of beauty, art, history, and unique experiences. It was a testament to the city's ability to leave an indelible mark on your heart, even in the briefest of visits. Venice, you truly are a place of magic, and we can't wait to return for a longer enchanting stay. Arrivederci!
