Kathy's Raised Garden Beds

“This year was the perfect time for my husband and me to build some raised beds in our backyard.  I love to be puttering in a garden and since we moved into our home 2 years ago, we’ve realized that the ground is not the best for growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

The ground soil is mostly clay and rock which makes digging imperative for me and so we decided to have Rick build three 4’ x 10’ raised beds on the west side of our backyard.  We both love blueberries and raspberries, and I can already see some fruit growing on a few of the bushes!  I found some beautiful lettuce starts and broccoli so we will try them this year.  I was late in getting vegetables like potatoes, beets and carrots and will plan early next spring to incorporate them into one of the beds.  For herbs we use a lot of basil throughout the summer and planted it along with dill and rosemary.  For my cutting garden I love Dahlia’s and have Phlox and Salvia.

I will keep you posted with my garden’s progress throughout the summer.  Happy Gardening!!” -Kathy

Transform Your Space with Wallpaper: A Guide to Elevating Your Interiors

When it comes to interior design, the power of wallpaper is often underestimated. Far from being a relic of the past, wallpaper has made a triumphant return, offering endless possibilities for transforming your space. Whether you're looking to add a splash of color, a touch of elegance, or a bold statement, wallpaper is a versatile and stylish option. In this blog, we'll explore the many benefits of wallpaper, current trends, and tips for choosing the perfect design for your home.

The Benefits of Wallpaper

1. Versatility

One of the biggest advantages of wallpaper is its versatility. With an incredible range of patterns, textures, and colors available, wallpaper can suit any style or mood. From traditional damasks and florals to contemporary geometrics and abstract designs, there's something for every taste.

2. Durability

Modern wallpapers are designed to last. Many are washable and can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life, making them a great choice for high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms. Some wallpapers even have antimicrobial and moisture-resistant properties, perfect for kitchens and bathrooms.

3. Easy to Install and Remove

Gone are the days of tedious wallpaper removal. Today's wallpapers are much easier to install and remove, thanks to advancements in adhesive technology. Peel-and-stick options are particularly user-friendly, allowing for quick changes without damaging your walls.

4. Adds Depth and Texture

Wallpaper can add a level of depth and texture that paint simply can't achieve. Textured wallpapers, such as grasscloth or embossed designs, create a tactile experience that adds richness and dimension to any room.

Current Wallpaper Trends

1. Bold Patterns and Colors

Maximalism is in, and bold, eye-catching patterns are a fantastic way to embrace this trend. Think oversized florals, vibrant tropical prints, and dramatic geometrics. These designs can create a focal point in any room, making a strong style statement.

2. Nature-Inspired Designs

Bringing the outside in continues to be a popular trend. Wallpapers featuring botanical prints, landscapes, and natural textures like wood and stone can create a serene and grounding atmosphere in your home.

3. Metallic Accents

For a touch of glamour, look for wallpapers with metallic accents. Gold, silver, and copper details can catch the light and add a luxurious feel to your space. These are especially effective in dining rooms, bedrooms, and powder rooms.

4. Murals and Custom Designs

Custom murals and large-scale prints are perfect for creating a unique and personalized space. Whether it’s a map of the world in a child’s bedroom or an abstract art piece in the living room, murals can transform an entire wall into a piece of art.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wallpaper

1. Consider the Room’s Purpose

Think about how the room will be used and the mood you want to create. Soft, muted patterns can make a bedroom feel calm and relaxing, while bright, dynamic designs can energize a home office or playroom.

2. Sample First

Always order samples before committing to a wallpaper. This allows you to see how the pattern looks in your space and under different lighting conditions.

3. Mix and Match

Don't be afraid to mix different wallpapers within your home. Using complementary patterns and colors can create a cohesive look while still adding variety and interest.

4. Scale and Proportion

Pay attention to the scale of the pattern. Large patterns can overwhelm small rooms, while tiny prints might get lost in larger spaces. Balance is key to achieving the desired effect.

Conclusion

Wallpaper is a fantastic tool for anyone looking to breathe new life into their interiors. With its versatility, durability, and the vast array of designs available, it's easy to find a wallpaper that fits your style and needs. Whether you're going for bold and dramatic or subtle and sophisticated, wallpaper can help you create a space that truly feels like home. So, why not take the plunge and let your walls tell a story?

Seamless Harmony: The Trend of Painting Door Frames and Baseboards in Wall Colors

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, trends come and go, shaping the way we perceive and decorate our living spaces. One recent trend that has gained popularity is the practice of painting door frames and baseboards the same color as the walls. This departure from the traditional white trim creates a seamless and cohesive look that transforms the way we perceive boundaries within our homes. In this blog, we'll explore the reasons behind this trend and offer insights on how to successfully embrace this harmonious approach!

  1. The End of Contrast: Historically, white trim has been a go-to choice for creating a visual contrast with colored walls. However, the trend of painting door frames and baseboards in the same color as the walls challenges this convention. By eliminating the stark contrast, this approach fosters a sense of continuity and flow throughout a room.

  2. Visual Continuity and Space Perception: Painting trim the same color as the walls creates a visual continuity that tricks the eye into perceiving space differently. The absence of distinct lines between walls and trim allows for a smoother transition from one surface to another, making rooms appear larger and more open.

  3. Modern Elegance: The trend aligns with the modern design aesthetic, where simplicity and clean lines take center stage. By unifying the color palette, the overall effect is one of modern elegance. This approach allows other design elements and furnishings to stand out, making a bold statement without the distraction of contrasting trim.

  4. Embracing Minimalism: For those drawn to minimalism, painting door frames and baseboards the same color as the walls is a natural choice. This approach eliminates visual clutter, creating a serene and uncluttered atmosphere. The focus shifts to the essentials, emphasizing the beauty of simplicity.

  5. Choosing the Right Color: While the trend promotes unity in color, selecting the right hue is crucial. Neutral tones like soft grays, warm beiges, or muted pastels work well for achieving a seamless look. Experiment with samples in different lighting conditions to find a color that complements your overall design scheme.

  6. Professional Execution: Achieving a flawless look requires careful execution. Proper preparation, including sanding and priming, ensures a smooth finish. Use high-quality paint to enhance durability and longevity. Consider seeking professional help if you're unsure about tackling the project yourself.

  7. Accenting with Furnishings and Decor: With the trim blending into the walls, furnishings and decor become key players in defining the room's character. Introduce accent pieces, artwork, and textiles to add pops of color and interest. This allows you to personalize the space without the distraction of contrasting trim.

The trend of painting door frames and baseboards the same color as the walls challenges traditional design norms, offering a fresh and modern approach to interior aesthetics. Whether you're drawn to the visual continuity, the illusion of expanded space, or the elegance of minimalism, this trend provides a canvas for creating a harmonious and personalized home. Consider experimenting with this approach in your space and discover how it transforms the way you experience and enjoy your living environment.

Keeping it Real: Merriam-Webster's 'Authentic' Crowned Word of the Year 2023!

Guess what just made it to the top of the lexical charts? Drumroll, please... Merriam-Webster Dictionary has officially declared "Authentic" as the Word of the Year for 2023!

Yep, you read that right. In a world that sometimes feels like it's spinning off its axis, Merriam-Webster has picked a word that brings us back to our roots, our true selves, and the essence of genuine connections.

Let's break it down a bit. So, why "Authentic"?

Living in the Real World: We all know that social media can sometimes make our lives look like a highlight reel. With filters, curated posts, and perfectly timed snaps, authenticity can seem like a rare gem. But, hold on tight, because "Authentic" is here to remind us that being genuine, real, and true to ourselves is not only enough but worthy of celebration!

Everyday Heroes: Merriam-Webster's choice reflects a societal shift towards appreciating authenticity in people, brands, and experiences. It's a nod to those who keep it real, who don't hide behind masks, and who embrace their uniqueness. Authenticity is the hero in a world that sometimes seems to be drowning in a sea of staged moments.

I named my company Authentic Home because I believe in the power of genuine connections and true comfort. A home should be more than just a physical space; it should resonate with authenticity, reflecting the unique essence and stories of those who inhabit it. Authenticity in every aspect, from design to service, is the cornerstone of my company. I want people to experience a sense of belonging and sincerity when they enter an Authentic Home – a place where they can truly be themselves and create lasting memories. The name embodies my commitment to providing homes that are not only beautifully designed but also deeply genuine, fostering a sense of real belonging and comfort!

Merriam-Webster's Insight: Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster, shed some light on the choice, saying, "In a time where superficiality sometimes takes center stage, 'Authentic' emerged as a beacon of clarity, reminding us to cherish what is real and true."

So, whether you're vibing with the word because you're all about keeping it real or because you appreciate the authenticity movement, one thing's for sure – "Authentic" is the word we didn't know we needed!

Decorating with Houseplants

Houseplants have become an integral part of modern-day home decor. Not only do they purify the air and improve the aesthetics of a room, but they also provide numerous other benefits. Decorating with houseplants is not as complicated as one may think, and with these simple steps, you can transform any living space into a botanical paradise!

The first thing you should do when considering adding houseplants to your home decor is to assess your space. Take note of how much natural light the room receives, as this will help you choose the appropriate plants. There are houseplants that thrive in low, medium, and high light, so pick one that matches your lighting situation. If your room has little to no natural light, opt for a plant that does well in low light, like a ZZ plant, spider plant, or snake plant.

Once you have identified the plants you would like to add, you can start thinking about their placement. Hanging plants are perfect for small rooms or areas where space is limited. They add dimension and texture to a room and make for an interesting visual feature. If you're not into hanging plants, a tabletop or floor plant works great as well. Just make sure it complements your space, and the height is proportional to your room.

In addition to choosing the right plants and finding the right location, accessorizing with houseplants can bring out the beauty of the greenery and enhance the decor. You can choose pots of varying sizes, shapes, and colors that suit the look of your home. Hanging pots, terrariums, and macramé planters can also make your houseplants look amazing and transform your space into a plant-filled paradise.

In conclusion, decorating with houseplants doesn't have to be a daunting task. By choosing the right plants, finding the best location for them, and accessorizing them with unique pots, you can elevate your home's decor with greenery. Whether you are a seasoned plant lover or a newbie, this is an easy and accessible way to bring a little bit of nature indoors and beautify your living space.

Coastal Interior Design: Get the Look

Are you looking to bring the beauty of the ocean into your home? Coastal interior design is a perfect way to bring a touch of the shore into your living space. Whether you're looking to go all-in with an ocean themed decor or just add a few subtle hints of the coast, this blog post will show you how to get the look of coastal interior design in your own home. From selecting the right colors to choosing the perfect furniture and accessories, this post will help you create a tranquil and inviting atmosphere inspired by the sea.

Simple Color Palettes

When it comes to coastal interior design, it is all about keeping it simple. Neutral colors such as white, cream, taupe, and beige are perfect for creating a beachy feel. These shades are calming, airy, and bring a sense of peace to the room. Accent colors can be added with pops of blues, greens, and yellows for an extra touch of ocean vibes. Adding in dark accents such as navy or charcoal gray gives a modern twist to the look. Keeping your color palette neutral will help to create a unified space that still has personality and charm.

Natural Materials

When designing a coastal interior, one of the best ways to add a unique touch is to incorporate natural materials. Natural materials, like driftwood, seashells, sea glass and coral, all add a unique texture and charm to your space. Driftwood can be used to create shelving or furniture pieces that have a beachy vibe. Seashells can be collected and placed in glass vases or mason jars as decorative accents. Sea glass can be used to create colorful window treatments or wall hangings. Coral can be used to create beautiful statement pieces, such as lamps or sculpture. Adding natural elements to your coastal interior will add an element of beauty and interest to your space.

Textured Fabrics

Adding a touch of texture to your coastal interior design can make all the difference in bringing your space to life. Textured fabrics are a great way to add visual interest and depth, and they’re also incredibly versatile. From light cottons and linens to heavier materials like velvet or denim, there are a variety of textiles you can incorporate into your decor.

Cotton and linen are great options for upholstery pieces like sofas, chairs, and ottomans. These fabrics are light and airy, perfect for warm summer days and breezy evenings spent by the sea. For draperies, consider adding a heavier fabric like denim or velvet to create an inviting atmosphere that still keeps out the heat.

When it comes to accessorizing, don’t be afraid to mix different textures. Try pairing a lightweight throw blanket with a more substantial pillow to create depth and contrast. Then add some throws made from chunky knits, woven rugs, or macrame wall hangings for an extra layer of texture. With these pieces, you can create a cozy atmosphere that is reminiscent of days spent relaxing on the beach.

Sea-Inspired Accents

If you want to bring a true coastal feel to your interior design, then adding some sea-inspired accents is the perfect way to do it. From starfish and coral to driftwood and shells, there are plenty of fun and creative ways to incorporate nautical elements into your space.

For a subtle but stylish look, consider using a few statement pieces. A large piece of driftwood makes an excellent centerpiece for a mantle or coffee table, while small shells or starfish can be used as table or shelf decorations. You can also go for something bolder, such as a large wall mural depicting a beach scene or a detailed model of a sailboat.

If you’re looking for something a little softer, try incorporating some textured fabrics. Sea-inspired throws or pillows with a hint of blue or white can make any room more inviting and calming. You could also use seagrass rugs for an earthy texture and fresh, ocean-like scent.

Finally, if you want to add some drama and depth, try incorporating lighting inspired by the sea. Seaweed-shaped chandeliers or lamps with a deep blue hue will certainly create an impact in any room.

No matter what type of sea-inspired accents you choose, they will give your interior design an instant coastal feel. So why not get creative and experiment with these ideas today?

Decorating with Mirrors: Tips and Tricks to Get Started

Decorating with mirrors is a great way to add character and style to any room in the home. Mirrors can be used to brighten dark spaces, create the illusion of a larger room, or simply to give a room an extra decorative touch. In this blog post, we'll explore some tips and tricks to help you get started with decorating with mirrors. From choosing the right style of mirror to creating a cohesive look, you'll learn everything you need to know to get the most out of decorating with mirrors.

The Basics of Decorating with Mirrors

Decorating with mirrors is an easy way to add style and visual interest to any room in your home. Mirrors can reflect light, making the space appear brighter and larger. They also serve as a great focal point and add a touch of elegance to a room. Whether you’re looking for a subtle addition or an eye-catching accent piece, mirrors can be a great option for updating your space.

Before you start decorating with mirrors, it’s important to understand the basics of mirror placement and size. If you’re just getting started, it’s best to focus on one area of the room at a time. The size of the mirror should be in proportion to the size of the space. For example, if you have a large wall, you should opt for a large mirror that will fill the space without overwhelming it. However, if you have a smaller wall, you should choose a smaller mirror to keep the room from feeling cluttered.

In terms of placement, mirrors can be hung horizontally or vertically, depending on the shape of the wall and the look you’re going for. Horizontally placed mirrors create an expansive feeling while vertical mirrors tend to create a more dramatic effect. Consider how much natural light the space receives when deciding which direction to hang the mirror.

When selecting a mirror for a room, consider both function and style. Mirrored furniture can bring a unique aesthetic to a room and can also help to reflect light throughout the space. For walls, look for frames that match the overall décor of the room. If you’re aiming for a more traditional look, consider ornate frames with intricate detailing. If you’re looking for something more modern, opt for sleek and minimalist frames.

No matter how you decide to decorate with mirrors, it’s important to remember that they can make any room feel larger and more inviting. With the right placement and styling, you can easily transform any room in your home with just one simple addition.
